Mains Layer


Overview

Registration as a Mains Layer is for a period of 5 years.

Energy & Utility Skills will register the pathway completed for the Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas). Details of the required units are specified below and can be downloaded for the NCO suite here.

The table below shows the minimum units for completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Mains Layer qualification for Self-Lay and Distribution pathways. Repair & Maintenance pathway equates to the Distribution pathway plus the requirements for Escape, Locate and Repair.


Evidence Requirements

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Mains Layer.

Depending on the City and Guilds qualification, individuals will be also be registered as either ‘Self-Lay’ or ‘Distribution’.

Mains Layer up to 180mm

Self-Lay Pathway:

  • 201 Create an efficient and effective environment in Utilities Network Construction
  • 202 Maintain a safe and secure working environment in utilities network construction
  • 203 Establish and maintain effective and working relationships in utilities network construction
  • 205 Install equipment for safe working on sites for utilities network construction
  • 206 Locate and avoid supply apparatus for utilities network construction
  • 207 Excavate and maintain holes and trenches for utilities network construction
  • 209 Operate powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable requirements on utilities network construction
  • 210 Join materials by electrofusion processes on utilities network construction
  • 211 Joint materials by butt fusion processes on Utilities Network Construction, up to 180mm diameter
  • 214 Conduct specified testing of Gas network engineering products or assets – mains
  • 302 Install gas engineering products or assets up to 180mm

 Mains Layer up to 180mm

Distribution pathway:

  • 201 Create an efficient and effective environment in Utilities Network Construction
  • 202 Maintain a safe and secure working environment in utilities network construction
  • 203 Establish and maintain effective and working relationships in utilities network construction
  • 204 Install equipment for safe working on the highway for utilities network construction
  • 205 Install equipment for safe working on sites for utilities network construction
  • 206 Locate and avoid supply apparatus for utilities network construction
  • 207 Excavate and maintain holes and trenches for utilities network construction
  • 209 Operate powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable requirements on utilities network construction
  • 210 Join materials by electrofusion processes on utilities network construction
  • 211 Joint materials by butt fusion processes on Utilities Network Construction, up to 180mm diameter
  • 214 Conduct specified testing of Gas network engineering products or assets – mains
  • 216 Conduct specified connections to gas network mains and commissioning
  • 302 Install gas engineering products or assets up to 180mm

Mains Layer up to 355mm (Distribution)

All of the units listed above for 180mm plus:

  • 212 Join materials by butt fusion processes on utilities network construction, above 180mm diameter or
  • 306 Joint materials by fusion processes on utilities network construction, above 180mm diameter

and

  • 303 Install gas engineering products or assets above 180mm or
  • 309 Install gas engineering products or assets above 180mm, up to and including 355mm

Mains Layer 400mm and above (Distribution)

All units listed above for 355mm on the relevant pathway plus:

  • 308 Install gas engineering products or assets above 355mm, or
  • In-house certificate confirming training and assessment on pipe sizes larger than 400mm – *Note this route to registration is under review and no new applications for registration against this category will be accepted until this work is completed. We anticipate that this work will be concluded before the end of December 2021 and will update our website to reflect the outcome of this review.
